Substitutes & Variations
- Extra flavour: Add some sugar or oyster sauce for more umami flavour.
- Instead of prawns, you can use any of your favourite proteins. Check out my Sesame Chicken Toast for your inspiration.
- For a kick of spice, drizzle some chilli oil over the prawn toast before serving.
- Typical Chinese restaurants and takeaways use soft white bread but you can also try with other type of bread like sourdough, focaccia bread etc.
- I used French baguette in my Sesame Chicken Toast recipe. It’s a tasty twist on the classic Chinese toast!
- Just a bit of cooking oil should be sprayed over the prawn toast for a golden, crispy texture. You can skip the cooking oil spray if you are on a diet or wish to avoid oil.
- If you don't have cooking oil spray on hand, you can brush regular cooking oil, use a pastry brush and tap over the prawn toast.
🌟 Expert Tips
Use a slightly stale bread that tends to hold better when spreading the fillings. Stale hard bread doesn’t absorb the oil and is easier to crisp up.
If the bread is too soft, you can toast it lightly or let it air dry for a few hours and dry out naturally.
Use uncooked prawns instead of pre-cooked/boiled prawns for the best texture and flavour.
To test the flavour, place one teaspoon of fillings in the microwave-safe bowl. Microwave for 15-20 seconds until fully cooked. Make a taste test, and then you can adjust the seasonings if necessary.
Instructions
- Step 1: Use a sharp knife and chop the prawns until it forms a paste.
- Step 2: Mix it with egg white, grated garlic, spring onions, soy sauce, cornstarch and sesame oil. Season it with salt and pepper to taste.
- Step 3: Trim off the crusts of the bread and slice each piece into triangles or squares on your preference. ( You can leave the crust for extra texture. ) Preheat the air fryer to 200C/400F.
- Step 4:Spread the prawn mixture evenly on the bread.
- Step 5: Sprinkle sesame seeds over it.
- Step 6: Place the prawn toasts in the air fryer basket in a single layer.
- Step 7: Spray cooking oil over them. Air fry the toasts for 5-7 minutes or until golden and crispy.
- Step 8: Serve immediately with your favourite dipping sauce.
Storage and Reheating
To Freeze
Place the uncooked prawn toast over the baking sheet in a tray in a single layer. Freeze for 2-3 hours until set. Then, transfer them to a freezer-safe bag or container. You can freeze for up to 2 months.
Once cooked, let them cool down completely, then store them in an airtight container. You can refrigerate or freeze them according to your preference. You can keep it in the fridge for 2-3 days.
Reheating
The best way to reheat prawn toast is in the air fryer at 180C/350F for 2-3 minutes or until it regains crispiness before serving.
Alternatively, reheat it in the oven at 180C/350F for 5-6 minutes or until crispy again.
Avoid microwaving, as it can make the toast lose its crunchy texture.
FAQ
Instead of frying the prawn toast in air fryer, you can bake it in the oven. Place them over the lined baking tray and bake in a preheated oven at 200°C (400°F) for 10-12 minutes or until crispy and golden.
Prawn toast goes well with Chinese sweet and sour sauce, Thai sweet chilli sauce, soy sauce with a splash of rice vinegar and chilli oil, Sriracha sauce, spicy mayo, etc. Choose the dipping sauce according to your liking to complement the crispy shrimp toast!
To make a prawn toast ahead of time, prepare the prawn mixture and spread it on the bread, then refrigerate or freeze until you are ready to fry.
You can customize the fillings by adding extra dried shiitake mushrooms, Asian chives, coriander, fresh or dried chillies, etc.
